FAQ

The cost of my sessions depends on session length and my driving time (if applicable), but I aim for reasonable rates. Skype sessions are $20/hour, while in-person sessions are about $40/hour. I give a discount for sessions longer than one hour.
Sometimes I tutor a pair of students at the same time (for example, siblings who are close in age), for a slightly higher fee.

03  /        What are your tutoring rates?  Are there any discounts?

I meet with students on Skype, at their homes, at local libraries in Gwinnett County, GA, or at cafes/restaurants.

If you need tutoring for a specific school course or class, I will focus on the materials given you by your teacher/professor.  For English and Spanish language learners, I use a variety of textbooks and websites, plus activities which I create myself.  With writing and language arts students, I make use of websites and literature as well as my own exercises.  Regarding test preparation, I share practice materials directly from the testing companies SAT, ACT, and TOEFL.

02  /          What lesson materials do you use?
06  /      What's the minimum time to work with a tutor?

It depends on each individual's needs; I don't turn people away if I can help them, whether they desire 3 sessions or 30. Sometimes I will see writing students only once or twice, to help with an essay. I do have some suggestions, though.  If you are preparing for the SAT or another long exam, I recommend at least 2-3 months of weekly tutoring. If a student is failing a class, it's best to commit to a couple of months (depending on how quickly grades improve). For language learners, there is a lot more flexibility. Some learners only want a few sessions to improve their pronunciation, whereas others want to study intensively for 6 months, or until they feel fluent.

Yes.  After each session, I always email students a brief summary of the lesson, along with a reminder of the homework assignment.

05  /       Can I review my previous sessions?

I started tutoring in 2008 as a part-time writing consultant for college and graduate students.  The job was so satisfying that on my graduation in 2010, I started work as a Spanish and creative writing classroom teacher for local homeschooled students. I gained more experience by substitute teaching in local schools. To increase my skills in ESL instruction and Spanish, I lived and worked in San Juan, Puerto Rico for 6 months, teaching English at Pan-American Language Institute. Since 2013, I have worked with the tutoring companies WyzAnt and Varsity Tutors, coaching kids and adults in Spanish, ESL, writing, reading, and study skills.  In the last year or two, I have branched out to form my own private tutoring studio.
